The New Kid

Summary: Jordan is starting a new school, Riverdale Academy Day School which is known to be a mostly white and private school. He quickly notices that he is one of the fewest students of color in the school. This story shows how he handles going to school here while trying to keep his old friends at Washington Heights. This book follows him throughout his 7th grade school year and by the end of the year he feels much more comfortable at this school.

Target Audience: The target audience for this book would be for 4th-6th grade. I also feel that this book would be good for students that feel ‘different’ or like an outsider or even the feeling of being the new kid in school.

Same, Same but Different

Genre: Fiction, Children’s Literature 

Summary: This book is about two kids that are living in two different countries being eachothers pen pals. Throughout the story we are able to see the similarities and differences of the children's life. The kids are able to understand what it is like to live in a different country by sending pictures back and forth so they are able to get a better perspective of their lives.

Target Audience: The target audience for this book would be for 2-4th grade. This book shows that it is alright to be different and would be a great book to have in the classroom to help show not everyone comes from the same background.

Junie B. First Grader (At Last!)

 APA: Park, B. (2005). Junie B., first grader (at last!). Random House.

Genre: Fiction

Summary: Junie B. is starting 1st grade which means getting used to a whole different teacher, classroom and different students in the class. She starts off the school year having minimal to no friends but by the end of the book she has made some friends. This book also goes through the struggle Junie B. is having when she has a hard time reading the chalkboard and when she finds out she needs glasses.

Target Audience: The target audience for this book I feel would be great for the grades 3-5th. I also feel that it is good for students that may be experiencing something new and unexpected in their lives and accepting the new normal like Junie B. getting glasses.

Geronimo Stilton This Hotel is Haunted

 APA:Dami, E., Turati, V., & Heim, J. (2012). Geronimo Stilton. This hotel is haunted! Scholastic.

Genre: Fiction

Summary: This story is an interesting take on a younger readers story. The story goes about another adventure of Geronimo Stilton and instead this time during his investigation of a haunted hotel! Geronimo and his friend Hercule were both very incredibly spooked but eventually solved the mystery. Such a very great read for even younger readers. 

Target Audience: The target audience for this book would be great for the range of grades 3-5th. The text is enjoyable and not overly scary for this younger range.

Genre: Fiction

Summary: This book is a great read as it mentions a disability and how one particular character, Ellie, who is very positive about her time in a wheelchair. She has dreams, and tests out her cooking talents on her mother. The story goes on to seemingly make Ellie’s life a bit more difficult than she was used to and they have to move to take care of her grandfather. This new town is a new start for Ellie and she has to take her time getting used to everything happening all at once, but eventually makes it through and is happier where she is at the end of the story than where she was at the start.

Target Audience: The target audience for this book will be great for grades 4-7th. This text will challenge and help students transition to reading chapter books.

Abuela

 APA: Dorros, A., Dorros, S. M., & Kleven, E. I. (1995). Abuela. Dutton Children's Books.

Genre: Fiction

Summary: This beautiful story is all about the adventures that a girl has with her grandmother, or Abuela as it is in Spanish. The story has them travelling from a park to the skies with birds, and all the way across the country. The story uses great back and forths between the English words and their Spanish counterparts. 

Target Audience: The target audience for this text would most likely be a younger audience such as 2-5th grade. Since the book is considered a bilingual book it is also good for children that are in the process of learning English as a second language or vica-versa.

Discovering Titanic

Genre: Non-Fiction

Summary: This book is a purely informational text designed to teach the modern generations about both the magnificence of the titanic as well as the tragic end to its short lived journey. This book is jam packed with details such as the sort of furniture that was aboard, the sort of jewels that the average passenger kept on them, and even covered the demands of the several furnaces and steam powered engines that propelled the ship in the water. 

Target Audience: Considering that this book is an informational text, any grade ranges from 1st all the way to 8th I believe are the target audiences.
