Danbi Leads the School Parade

APA: Kim, A.(2020). Danbi Leads the School Parade. Penguin Young Readers Group.

Genre: Children's Literature

Summary: Danbi is starting a new beginning at her first day in an American school after moving from South Korea and is incredibly nervous. At the start of class she is handed a marker and is unsure as to why. The start of class the teacher has her along with the whole class writing their names, and again is unsure why all of the other kids are not writing as neatly as she was. Hers was the only one with all straight lines while all the other children's had curves and bubbles.  Further throughout the day, all of the other students seem to be playing and dancing while inadvertently leaving out Danbi. This confused Danbi as she was unfamiliar with the rules of the games and how the dances go; however once it got to lunch time everyone looked at her and her unfamiliar food. To ease this astoundment, Danbi begins a small parade within the lunch room by banging her hand against her lunch box creating a loud, rhythmic sound. This event is what we get the title of the story from.

Target Audience: I feel the target audience is between the grade levels of preschool and 5th grade. Although the story is an easy read I feel the overall story is really important especially for the students who have a new adventure for them at a new school. The people likely to enjoy this book are those who have had to move to a new school and have felt left out due to cultural differences. The reason as to why they would enjoy this would be because of a relation to the awkwardness that Danbi felt after starting her first day at this new school entirely different from what she was used to.
